Gull Nest Sterilization

Gull Nest Sterilization

This mission aims to reduce the nuisances caused by an overpopulation of certain gull species in urban areas, without using intrusive or  harmful methods for the environment. It’s done without brutalizing the birds and without putting personnel at risk. These operations take place during the nesting period  from April to the end of June.

During this time, the birds are more aggressive than usual, especially if the chicks have already hatched. In such cases, we simply observe and record the species present, without intervening.

Our anti-gull drones offer a unique and effective way to carry out gull egg sterilization with precision and safety, helping to maintain ecological balance while ensuring peace and safety in urban environments. Indeed, an overpopulation of gulls often leads to the decline of other bird species.

Locating Gull Nests and Eggs

With our innovative technologies, we can comprehensively and accurately map areas where gulls have established their nests. This facilitates targeted and effective intervention to reduce gull populations and their impact in urban or coastal environments.

Depending on the region, different gull species are found. For example, along the French Riviera, the most common species is the Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis), which is closely related to the Herring Gull seen along the Atlantic and English Channel coasts. In regions like Brittany and Normandy, you will also find Lesser Black-backed Gulls and Great Black-backed Gulls.

Mapping Gull Nests

Gull nest mapping is an essential operation to understand the distribution and density of these birds and to plan appropriate management measures.

Our drones are equipped with advanced mapping systems that allow for the collection of precise and reliable data on the location of gull nests within a given area. This enables us to quantify them by species.

Using specialized sensors and image processing software, our drone experts produce detailed maps indicating the exact location of nests. This enables better analysis of nesting patterns and the implementation of effective management strategies to minimize human–wildlife conflicts and preserve ecological balance.

Gull Nest Sterilization by Drone

Gull nest sterilization is one of our specialized drone services. This method aims to regulate gull populations, particularly in urban areas where these birds can become a nuisance due to their droppings and aggressive behavior toward people, pets, or tourists, whether in cities, markets, or beaches.

Sterilization is done using a safe, natural oil sprayed directly onto the eggs, which prevents them from hatching without harming the environment. The drone approaches the nest, withstands wind gusts thanks to its onboard technology, and the pilot knows its exact position to the centimeter. The spraying system is specially designed for oil application. To be effective, the operation should not occur if it has rained within 15 minutes or if rain is expected within the next 15 minutes.

Each treated nest is meticulously monitored and mapped for accurate counting follow-up and population monitoring.

This mission requires qualified, trained, and certified personnel for the recognition of different gull species. This ensures compliance with prefectural regulatory agreements and precise statistical tracking of the work performed and the evolution of populations in the targeted city.

Gull Deterrence

Deterring Yellow-legged and Herring Gulls is a non-lethal technique used to drive these birds away from areas where their presence can cause nuisance. Our drones are equipped with sound and visual devices, such as predator calls and flashing lights, designed to scare gulls and prevent nesting in unwanted locations.

These techniques are used by our drone professionals to scare gulls away and discourage them from settling in undesirable locations.

Ultimately, this method effectively modifies gull behavior without causing them harm, while helping to reduce conflicts with human activities and protect infrastructure and public spaces.

Gull Nest Removal by Drone

Removing gull nests is another important step of managing  these bird populations, especially in areas where they pose nuisance problems. Using our specialized tools, we can safely and efficiently remove gull nests by drones, thereby reducing negative impacts on the environment.

Furthermore, this approach minimizes the risk of disturbance to the birds themselves, contributing to responsible and respectful wildlife management.
