The processionary caterpillar is a growing scourge that requires new, effective solutions
With double-digit growth every 5 years, the processionary caterpillar is nesting for longer periods and almost everywhere in France. Their stings cause unbearable rashes, which are even worse for our children and pets. Oak trees are easier to treat due to their lower branches.
Despite traps that are only half-effective for pine trees, pole pruning to remove cocoons—which is effective but not for high branches—and the relatively toxic BTK biocide, which is only authorized in certain years… in short, we tested using a drone… and it works! Very well, in fact. Even though pole pruning remains effective for lower branches.
We are dedicating this solution to pine trees, where caterpillars build their cocoons at the tips of branches, making them accessible to drones.
Here is a drone technology tested since 2020 and proven ever since, using an effective, eco-friendly treatment product.
Our partner, INRAE, is launching a new treatment method alongside us, featuring a product that is even more eco-friendly and costs next to nothing.


Features of the Hornet drone for pine processionary caterpillar treatment
3 versions:
- Hornet 2: 3.9 kg loaded with battery and product
- RTK drone (Centimeter-level precision with multi-satellite tracking, necessary for safe and easy flight between trees)
- Ground distance LiDAR for added flight stability
- Flight time at full capacity:
- – Approximately 15 min
- 75 cl canister of 100% natural product for treating pine processionary caterpillars: 4 cocoons per flight on Hornet 2
- Generally, there are 4 to 5 cocoons per tree, though this can be more or less. The sooner we intervene, the fewer there are.
- Specialized pump
- Nozzle specially adapted to the requirement
- Power sufficient to withstand wind gusts
This drone complies with the European C5 regulatory class
The anti-caterpillar drone is connected to an AI-powered web app
A web app already developed for another application is currently being adapted and will be sold with the drone, allowing clients to view each treated cocoon in a photo on a precise map online, with the ability to automatically compare statistics from one year to the next.
