Security drones
The security drone can be an aerial surveillance technology used to enhance security in various contexts, such as border monitoring, critical infrastructure protection, or public safety in urban areas. The security drone is generally equipped with high-resolution cameras, thermal sensors, intrusion detection systems, and long-range communication, allowing it to detect and track suspicious activities over vast areas of land.
Currently, governments and municipalities are investing in camera surveillance systems to improve civil security. The 2 security drone systems developed by our design office, Cominthesky, were designed to meet this need.
The Super Eagle security drone: This drone system is adapted for the security of sensitive sites, open-air storage sites, and large private properties.
The Flying Sensor (FSS3) security drone: This drone system is adapted for the security of sites housing a nuclear power plant and for potentially polluting industrial sites (generally classified as SEVESO)

Edouard GUILHOT, then CEO of Civic Drone, won a tender in 2014 with the ILL (Institut Laue-Langevin), a nuclear reactor located near the CEA in Grenoble, to deliver 2 customized Flying Sensor (FSS3) drone systems for this nuclear power plant. The goal was to provide security drone systems adapted for crisis management in the event of a potential crack in the nuclear reactor, following a tidal wave potentially caused by the failure of the EDF dam located just under 20 km upstream. This could occur in the event of major earthquakes on the fault line running from Italy into the Alps.
Functions of the Flying Sensor (FSS3) security drone
- Automated and programmed scripted flight without a pilot
- Scheduled and automated delivery of multiple radioactive measurement probes to different waypoints in a single flight, with sub-meter precision
- The same drone must be able to carry a different payload to record 4 atmospheric samples at different waypoints
- Flight in driving rain if necessary and in wind with gusts of up to 70 km/h
- Flight range of up to 10 km around the reactor.
- Drone tested to withstand the strong vibrations of an earthquake
- Flight tested to operate on-site despite ambient magnetism.
